HYDERABAD: All India Congress Committee President Sonia Gandhi will visit the State on April 7 to address election meetings in north Coastal Andhra and Telangana, which go to polls in the first phase on April 16.
Sources in the AP Congress Committee said that a request has been made to the central leadership to plan for two visits of Ms. Gandhi to the State before the first phase of elections. Tentatively, the party has urged the central leadership to ensure that she addresses at least three public meetings on each visit.
Ms. Gandhi is likely to address a public meeting in Vizianagaram district on April 7 and two more in Telangana region. “Ms. Gandhi may tag on her tour of Orissa with that of the State, as both the States go to polls in the first phase. We expect her to cover one meeting in Orissa and address another in North Coastal Andhra preferably Vizianagaram before flying to Telangana, where two more meetings are planned,” the sources pointed.
Efforts are on to select places, which were not covered by her during her last visit to the State, when she addressed meetings in Bhadrachalam and Secunderabad. This time, APCC leaders have urged her to select at least one place each in North and South Telangana.
A senior APCC functionary said Ms. Gandhi may also be requested to plan two more visits during the second phase.
