In what is believed to be a breakthrough in the spree of cash bag snatchings reported recently in different parts of the city, the Punjagutta police on Wednesday caught a suspect.

The detained person, police believe, is member of a gang which snatches cash bags from people. The suspect was caught in Punjagutta on Wednesday while he was doing a reconnaissance to commit a similar offence near a bank.

“Members of the gang lie in wait outside the banks. One of them identifies individuals carrying cash in bags and alerts his accomplice. The other members of the gang follow the target on bikes,” a police officer associated with the investigation said.

After reaching a secluded place or an area where there were no surveillance cameras, members of the gang would grab the bag from the person and flee on two-wheelers or simply run away. The suspect was being interrogated.
