Objection to foreign students smoking near OU Arts College

HYDERABAD: Alleged ‘smoking’ by some foreign students at the College of Arts and Social Sciences on Osmania University campus led to a clash with some local students objecting to it Monday.

The police took into custody four foreign students and six local students in connection with the incident that left three students on each side injured.

A case under section 160 (committing affray) of Indian Penal Code was registered against both the groups.

East Zone DCP T. Prabhakar Rao told reporters that some local students returning to the hostel from the library found some foreign students allegedly smoking cigarettes near the Arts College building.

“The foreign students were taking a group photograph then. An argument ensued as the local students objected to the foreign students smoking on campus,” the DCP said.

After heated arguments, students of both the groups attacked one another. As news about the clash spread, large number of local students gathered at the college and allegedly attacked the foreign students.

Tension prevailed on the campus for some time as both the groups resorted to stone pelting and attacked one another with sticks.

The Osmania University police resorted to mild lathicharge to disperse the groups.

Later, the local students staged a demonstration alleging that the Osmania University police failed to protect them even as the foreign students attacked them.
