In the unabated spate of road accidents stalking the State, all the six out of a 7-member family were killed on the spot when the auto rickshaw they were travelling reportedly collided with a Chittoor-bound APSRTC bus near Palamaner about 90 kms from here on the Chittoor-Bangalore highway on Wednesday.
Information reaching here said that the tragedy struck the family when the auto-rickshaw driver tried to overtake a vehicle and rammed the RTC bus.
The lone survivor was the driver, Srinivasulu Naidu, also said to be a member of the family who escaped death by jumping off the ill-fated the auto before it rammed the bus. The family from Galiveetivaripalle in the Kalakada mandal were reportedly on their way back home from Virupakshimpuram near Palamener where they took, Nagarajamma (50), wife of Srinivasulu Naidu for treatment of paralysis. Besides Nagarajamma, others who perished in the accident were Krishnama Naidu (55), Ramachandra Naidu (50), Praveenkumar (22), Lokeswar (14) and Srinivas (8).
Sub-Inspector, Punganur, Sivaramakrishna Reddy and other policemen from the station reached the spot and sent the body for post-mortem. A case is registered in the station.
In a separate road accident on the Tirumala-Papanasanam ghat road, four pilgrims were grievously injured when a private jeep and a van collided while negotiating a steep curve. All the injured have been rushed to the Govt-SVRR Hospital, Tirupati under critical condition.
