Six people, including two women and a child, were killed and four others sustained critical injuries on National Highway-5 under Venkatachalam police station limits on Saturday.
In just six days, ten people were killed and about 15 people sustained injuries in two accidents on the same road in Kakuturu village, on the city outskirts.
On May 23, four people, residents of Visakhapatnam, were killed when an APSRTC Volvo bus rammed a stationary lorry on the highway.
Meanwhile, in the accident which occurred on Saturday, two cars collided on the highway killing four persons on the spot. Two others succumbed to injuries in the DSR Government Hospital here.
The deceased were identified as Narayana Swamy (63), his wife Vijayalakshmi (56), car driver Ali (38), Rajendra (36), Gayatri (32) and Aravind (7). The injured children - Alekya, Abhi and two others – are undergoing treatment in the hospital.
One of the vehicles was proceeding from Nellore to Chennai, while the other was going towards Nellore from Gudur.
The accident took place when the vehicle coming to Nellore crossed the road divider in high speed and hit the car on the other side of the highway.
Police suspect that the car ran over the divider as one of the tyres got deflated. The two vehicles were completely damaged.
The screams of the injured requesting the passersby to give water and shift them to hospital, moved the hearts of people.
