ACB officials catch him, make him throw up the money
R. Chandra Kiran Reddy is SI of Humayunnagar
3rd SI from station to be held on graft charges
HYDERABAD: If you cannot hide the bribe amount, try to gulp it down!
That is what a Sub-Inspector of Humayunnagar police station R. Chandra Kiran Reddy, has allegedly done on Monday to evade Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials but was caught after the latter made him throw up Rs. 4,000 bribe he had accepted.
Interestingly, Reddy is the third SI of this police station to be arrested on graft charges. Seven months ago, even the ACP of Asifnagar division under which the police station comes, B. Mahender Reddy, was held on similar charge.
In the latest case, the SI had demanded bribe from Mohd. Zakariya, an accused in a theft case, to delay filing of charge-sheet, said ACB DSP P.V. Radha Krishna. Minutes after receiving the amount -- eight currency notes of Rs. 500 denomination each -- the SI walked out of the police station along with the complainant.
“We’re not sure if Reddy had some doubt but as soon as he stepped out of the police station, he suddenly boarded a passing city bus even as our team was waiting close-by,” the DSP explained. Alerted by Zakariya, the ACB team too got onto the bus and rounded up Reddy.
By then, the SI had stuffed the currency notes into his mouth to avoid being caught red-handed. He feigned ignorance when ACB officials grilled him about the bribe amount and refused to open his mouth. “We had a hunch that he had swallowed the amount and rushed him to the OGH for a stomach wash,” he said. The SI finally spat out the notes on reaching OGH. He tested positive when subjected to a chemical test.
