The State Energy Conservation Mission has taken its ‘Save Energy’ campaign to the next level by roping in ace international badminton players Saina Nehwal and Pullela Gopichand to inspire people, particularly youth, for judicious use of electricity.

Saina has pledged to campaign on behalf of SECM to help the State tide over power shortage to some extent. Proud to be associated with the campaign to create public awareness about the need to save power, she thanked the Chief Secretary, Chief Minister and State Energy Conservation Mission for involving her in the mission. Mr. Gopichand and Saina who met the Chief Secretary Minnie Mathew, who is SECM Chairperson, in the Secretariat on Wednesday to pledge their support said the initiative taken by the Government was necessary and important.

While there were many constraints to generate adequate power because of coal, gas shortage, every citizen could do his/her bit by switching off lights and fans when not required, regulating use of air-conditioners, and using solar water heaters to save energy. “I feel good doing this campaign as my social responsibility and in the process I also became educated about saving power in several ways,” Saina added.

She said she would spread the message at every platform to motivate youth. Of the 2.5 crore consumers in the State, if one crore consumers could switch off the tube lights for one hour, 400 MW of power could be saved, she said.

Munindra, Principal Secretary, Energy and A.Chandra Sekhara Reddy, CEO, SECM, said while State had capacity to generate 16,000 MW of power, only 10,000 MW was being generated due to fuel shortage.
