Several roads under sheets of water; wall collapses, power breakdown reported
A heavy downpour lashed the city on Wednesday evening inundating several areas.
However, it failed to dampen the spirit of Ganesh revellers. The centralised procession got slowed down on account of the incessant rain creating traffic jams all around. Nevertheless, the processionists inched ahead covering themselves with whatever they could.
Since the government had declared a holiday today due to the Ganesh immersion, the rain did not throw life out of gear. But those out on the roads had a difficult time reaching their homes. The cloudburst left several roads under sheets of water. Two to three feet high water was seen flowing at Charminar, Patherghatti, Osmangunj, Nampally, Lakdikapul, Khairatabad, Punjagutta and Somajiguda. Several low lying areas were flooded with rainwater entering houses. Wall collapses were reported from Afzalsagar, Mehdipatnam, Chintal Basti and Hakimpet. Mayor Majid Hussain visited the spots and other rain affected areas.
Power breakdown only added to the problem. As rain intensified several areas like Shahalibanda, Begum Bazar, Namaplly experienced power cut. The situation was particularly miserable in areas such as Afzalsagar, Bhavani Nagar, Toli Chowki which got inundated with rainwater.
There were complaints of water stagnation from many places such as Rasoolpura, Somajiguda, Khairatabad, Raj Bhavan Road, Malakpet railway bridge.
The worst hit was two-wheeler riders who had a tough time with the vehicles getting stranded in the waist-deep water.
Even after the rain subsided the roads presented a picture of chaos.
