Students' Federation of India, district committee, began indefinite fast at the Collector's office on Monday on various demands. R.Anand Rao, president, T. Asiri Naidu, U. Rambabu and M. Demudu Naidu (all members) sat on fast-unto-death. Mr. Anand Rao said though five months lapsed since the beginning of the academic year, a number of students had not received scholarships due to online technical problems. In some cases, the process of receiving applications had not been completed. The last date for receiving applications is November 30.
On welfare hostels, he said the government sanctioned Rs.5.60 per meal per head, which is inadequate considering the soaring prices of essentials in the market. They were not so far paid stitching charges for uniforms. The hostels are in dilapidated condition and they had been living in them with fear.
In college hostels, the mess charges paid per month was Rs.520 per head. Of the amount, workers' wages and maintenance were to be met, he said. In women's hostels, there are no toilets. Barring SC women, ST and BCs were not paid cosmetic charges. All the hostels are housed in rented buildings. In tribal welfare hostels, there are no permanent staff. The problems were brought to the notice of the Collector on several occasions.
