Week-long celebrations to mark formation of PLGA commence
CHINTAPALLI: The annual week-long celebrations to mark the formation of People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) of the CPI (Maoist) commenced in the Visakha Agency area on Wednesday.
Till late in the evening there were no reports of violence or other acts.
The weekly shandy here did not attract its usual quota of visitors and buyers and the reason was the commencement of PLGA week celebrations, the locals said.
At Narsipatnam, the gateway to the Visakha Agency, police were checking vehicles and verifying the bona fides of the people going towards the agency area or returning from it.
Security personnel, including the State police, Greyhounds and CRPF, were spread all over the Agency area and area domination exercise is continuing, Assistant Superintendent of Police S. Syamsundar said.
Main strike weapon
During this week, the Maoist party would generally concentrate on recruitment of cadre into the PLGA, its main strike weapon. Sinking a launch load of Greyhound constables and a few civilian policemen in Balimela reservoir in June last year in which 38 were killed, was credited to PLGA and according to reports reaching the Visakha Agency area, Jana Natya Mandali, cultural front of CPI (Maoist), is celebrating this ‘major strike’ on the Orissa-Andhra border during the PLGA week.
A top JNM leader is coordinating the week-long celebrations.
Last year’s PLGA week was devoid of any incidents and this time the police geared up to foil any incident.
PLGA was also responsible for the attack at Kalimela killing 17 Orissa police personnel, very soon after the Balimela incident and an attack in Narayangarh during which it looted weapons and ammunition.
PLGA’s plans to loot the CISF armoury at NALCO had failed.
