In a visit shrouded in complete secrecy, IT Czar and one of the founders of Microsoft, Bill Gates flew into the city on Thursday and visited the International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) at Patancheru near here.

Mr. Gates, who is the chairman of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, landed at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad in a chartered flight in the afternoon without much fanfare and headed for the International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics where he spent close to three hours.

A report from Sangareddy said that Mr. Gates interacted with the scientists, who appraised him about research activities at the institute.

Private visit

The officials of ICRISAT kept the visit as a top secret and did not invite the media. They claimed that it was a completely private visit. Mr. Gates wanted to know about the research work going at ICRISAT since Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation was one of the donor agencies.

An ICRISAT official claimed that many among the institute were not aware of the visit and it was kept as secret due to security reasons.

He was scheduled to leave the city on Thursday night or Friday morning.
