Various Dalit organisations observed the 56th death anniversary of Babasaheb Ambedkar with solemnity and veneration in various towns of Chittoor district including Tirupati.
Ambedkar’s statue was garlanded by Dalit leaders and political functionaries in all major towns of the district. At Tirupati, the Republican Party of India held a meeting at its office and regretted that even 65 years after Independence, social and political subjugation of the Dalits, besides the atrocities against them, still continued.
They attributed it to the alleged apathy of the police and the officials concerned who only pays lip sympathy but fail to do their precious little in curbing the evil.
The Madiga Student Federation (MSF) of S.V. University, visibly in an upbeat mood after the passage of the bill in the Assembly on SC/ST sub-plan, called upon the State government that as a next logical step, it should allocate the sub-plan funds to various categories of the Dalits on the basis of their population.
The TTD SC and ST Employees’ Welfare Association observed the day with a motorcycle rally from the Administrative Building to the Ambedkar statue junction and paid glowing tributes to the statesman, but for whose vision, they said, the lives of the Dalits in India would not be what it is today.
Similar sentiments were expressed at a function held by Scheduled Castes Welfare Association at Ambedkar Bhavan here. Girijana Hakkula Porata Samithi also observed the day with zeal and complemented its Convener B. Gundal Nayak on his selection for Ambedkar National Fellowship Award, which he would receive at a function in New Delhi on December 10.
