Students and staff of Swarna Bharathi Smart School celebrated Ramzan on the school campus on Saturday. All the rituals associated with the festival were scrupulously followed. Students recited Quran, sang songs, discussed the five tenets of Islam — Kalima — the declaration of faith, professing that there is only one God (Allah), Salat – the Islamic prayer, Zakat or alms-giving, a practice of charity by Muslims based on their wealth, Sawan, three types of fasting recognised by the Quran, and Hajj – a pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca. Recitation in Arabic was translated into English and Telugu for the understanding of others.
Chairman of the Swarna Bharathi Educational Society A. Sankar Rao, director K. Naga Suresh, principal Y. Lakshmi Prasanna Rani, and vice-principal K. Raghuram participated. Primary wing of Nalanda Vidya Niketan also celebrated the festival in advance. After recitation of the Namaaz, the children greeted each other with ‘Id Mubaarak’. This was followed by prayer songs and a few dance numbers. Headmistress M. Padmaja said the objective behind the celebration was to inculcate a sense of oneness among children. She said such events would help students promote peace and harmony.
