Glowing tributes were paid to noted social reformer Savitribai Jyotirao Phule on the occasion of her 115th death anniversary here on Sunday.

Dalit Hakula Parirakshana Samiti Prakasam district president Neelam Nagendara Rao recalled that she along with her husband Mahatma Jyotirao Phule strove for emancipation of women.

First female teacher

Savitribai was the first female teacher of the first women's school in the country, pointed out Darla Koteswara Rao, secretary of the Dalit Bahujana Front district unit, which organised the meet at the Ambedkar Bhavan to draw inspiration from her to improve the lot of downtrodden people.

Modern Marathi poetry

A pioneer of modern Marathi poetry, she had opened a school for untouchable girls in 1852.

She is a role model for all progressive thinkers, added P.V.Rao Mala Mahanadu district president Dara Anjaiah.
