VIZIANAGARAM: The District Sarpanches Association has resented the government decision to settle power bill arrears of panchayats to APTransco from the 12th Finance Commission grants.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, the association president Thallapudi Krishna said that minor panchayats had been depending on the Finance Commission grants to meet the regular expenditure i.e. sanitation, repairs to borewells, maintenance of drinking water schemes etc.
He demanded that the government write off the power bill arrears of panchayats.
Further, he appealed to the government to double the honororium of sarpanches from Rs. 600 (minor panchayats) and Rs. 1,200 (major panchayats) and also extend insurance scheme to them. He also urged the government to sanction an office building for the association in the district headquarters town.
