With the price of the popular Sona Masoori variety of rice going out of reach of common people, State Ministers S. Sailajanath and M. Mahidhar Reddy on Thursday launched the ‘Sanna Biyyam’ scheme here.
Under the scheme the popular Sanna Biyyam variety would be supplied to people at Rs. 30 per kg, they said after launching the scheme along with MP M. Srivasulu Reddy, at the Rythu Bazaar near the Kothapatnam bus stand here. Over 10,000 quintals of the superior variety of rice would be supplied under the scheme in the district.
While the much sought-after Sona Masoori rice has shot up to Rs. 43 per kg in the wholesale market, it was available only at Rs. 45 a kg in the retail market, bringing misery to common people.
Earlier, Dr. Sailajanath, the Minister in-charge of Prakasam district and Mr. Mahidhar Reddy, the Municipal Administration Minister launched the scheme for purchasing rice from millers locally for distribution at the Central Warehousing Corporation godown at Thuravagunta, near here.
Under the pilot scheme implemented in seven districts, including Prakasam district, the State Civil Supplies Corporation (APCSC) was entrusted with the task of procuring about 25,000 quintals of rice under decentralised procurement system from millers, for supply of ‘A’ grade rice to white-cardholders, they explained.
