Samaikyandhra stir has no impact on National Sports Day

Despite the on-going Samaikyandhra agitation, young schoolchildren of the city gathered at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium on Thursday to pay their tributes to hockey wizard Dhyan Chand on his birth anniversary which is celebrated all over the country as National Sports Day.

The school kids, from corporation and corporate schools, competed in hockey, football and tennis both in boys and girls segments. The tournaments were inaugurated by Deputy Regional Deputy Director G. Chinnaiah.

In the hockey, Vivekananda High School won a grand double by defeating Children’s Montessori High School 2-0 in the boys and beating AKTP Municipal High School 1-0 in the girls final. In football seven-a-side tournament, Bishop Grassi High School scored a 4-2 win over Nalanda Vidya Niketan in the final, while in tennis, G. Venkata Sai Kiran, Md. Sadiq and Md. Sohail made the podium finish in the under-12 boys segment. In the girls’ category Shamitha, Pravallika and Vijaya Bharathi took the first three places.

In the under-14 division, G. Venkata Sai Kiran, Md. Sadiq and Sk.Faiq took the top honours, along with V. Jytri, Shamitha and Mehak Mahajan in girls segment.

Mr. B. Sivaram attended as representative of Krishna District Olympic Association gave away the trophies and cups to the winners and runners-up along with District Sports Development Officer P. Ramakrishna and RDD G. Chinnaiah.

“As per the orders of Krishna District Collector Buddhaprakash M. Jyoti, the Krishna District Sports Authority has decided to provide the incentives from this year to the district players and associations affiliated to District Olympic Association for the development of sports and games in Krishna District,” DSDO Ramakrishna said.

“Cash incentives will be paid to the meritorious players of the district who secured gold or silver or bronze medals in national-level competitions,” he added. He said Rs. 10,116, Rs. 7,116 and Rs. 5,116 will be awarded for senior Nationals medallists while for the junior Nationals an amount of Rs. 7,116, Rs. 5,116 and Rs. 3,116 will be awarded the winners. In the sub junior Nationals segment an amount of Rs. 5,116, Rs. 3,116 and Rs. 2,116 will be given away to the first three winners.
