Protests against bifurcation of the State continued for the 53rd day across the district on Saturday as the Congress appeared to be determined to go ahead with the formation of Telangana State. The Samaikyandhra political and non-political Joint Action Committees (JACs) spearheaded the agitation with the Telangana statehood issue hanging fire for close to two months now even as the people in Seemandhra have kept their fight going with the hope that the State will remain intact.

Rallies, protests

On Saturday, various associations staged protest demonstrations and took out rallies through the main roads in Guntur city and other towns denouncing the Congress’ intransigent attitude to bifurcation of the State, which, they feared, would have serious consequences for several generations. Cloth merchants and their employees took out a massive rally carrying the National Flag in protest against bifurcation under the aegis of Vasavi Wholesale Cloth Merchants’ Association. They shouted slogans against the Congress and TRS for pushing the State into the present crisis that has dealt a severe blow to the economy.

Doctors demonstrate

Doctors and staff of the Government General Hospital in Guntur staged a demonstration against bifurcation and reiterated their support to the struggle for a unified State.  A bike rally was taken out by supporters of unified State from the Collector’s office to Hindu College Centre, where they also played musical chairs and other games conveying their anger at the proposed bifurcation. ‘Vanta Varpu’ was organised at various places in Guntur city and other towns as a mark of protest against the division of the State.
