Home Minister P. Sabitha Indra Reddy has exhorted talented young women to enter politics saying that it is the only avenue which provides them an opportunity to serve the masses, by taking inspiration from great personalities such as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Indira Gandhi was an ‘iron lady’ who made many sacrifices in the service of the nation. Her name still evokes reverence and is a driving force for many women to take the plunge into politics.

“No less a person is the Congress president Sonia Gandhi who emerged as one of the world’s most powerful women in spite of major personal setbacks,’’ Ms. Sabitha said.Addressing ‘Yuva Drishti-2012’, the Indian Youth Congress (IYC)’s women convention organised here on the occasion of Indira Gandhi’s birth anniversary on Monday, Ms. Sabitha said Indira Gandhi had introduced and implemented several path-breaking welfare schemes which improved the living standards of the poor.

“She transformed the country into an economic power. A lot more remains to be done to give shape to her vision,” the Home Minister said.

Ms. Sonia Gandhi too committed herself to development and people’s welfare. She did not bow her head to the rival parties who cast aspersions on her foreign origin and played all tricks to browbeat her.

But, she remained steadfast. She had even spurned the offer to don the Prime Minister’s mantle twice because she believed that the party was above her personal ambitions, Ms. Sabitha said.

During her reign, the Central government has achieved commendable progress and the United Progressive Alliance of which she is the chairperson, is glued to the task of taking the country to new heights.

Rahul Gandhi’s commitment to serve the people is also to be taken due note of.

Ministers Kasu Venkata Krishna Reddy and Dokka Manikya Vara Prasada Rao, MP J.D. Seelam, MLCs Singam Basavapunnaiah and Rayapati Srinivas, MLAs Gade Venkata Reddy, Sk. Mastan Vali and Yerram Venkateswara Reddy, All India Congress Committee Secretary Shanimol Usman, IYC general secretary M. Liju, Youth Congress leaders Ch. Vamsichand Reddy and T. Padma and others participated.

Later, Ms. Sabitha Indra Reddy and others presented Indira Gandhi awards to six women who rendered yeomen’s service in their fields.
