VISAKHAPATNAM: With rumours of kidnap of schoolchildren doing the rounds during the past few days in the city, parents are at their wits’ end. An aged woman, suspected to be a mentally deranged beggar, was beaten up at Vepagunta recently on the suspicion that she was kidnapping children.

Subsequently, there were rumours of schoolchildren being kidnapped by unidentified miscreants.

Police inquiries revealed that there was no truth in them. There was a talk that some children of the Municipal Corporation School at Madhavadhara were kidnapped on Monday.

“We went to the school and found that no one was kidnapped. We haven’t registered a case as no one has lodged any complaint,” said Kancharapalem CI Ravi Prakash.

Sigh of relief

Parents rushed to St. Ann’s School at Arilova on Tuesday afternoon following rumours that some of the children were kidnapped.

The parents refused to listen to the school authorities that nothing had happened and insisted on seeing their children. A woman was seen pleading with the school management to allow her to see her child once.

The parents went to the classrooms and heaved a sigh of relief on finding their children. Police Commissioner N. Sambasiva Rao expressed the view that some mischief mongers were trying to create a panic situation.
