Six members, including a woman, arrested

  • The arrests made in connection with robbery at DRDA official's house
  • Kingpin behind the gang is still at large

    Kakinada: The police have busted a gang in connection with the robbery at the residence of DRDA Assistant Project Director in the busy Pattabhi street of Ramaraopet here on December 22 with the arrest of six members including a woman, a former employee of Velugu project. However, the kingpin of the eight-member gang -- Veera Raghavulu alias Raghu and his brother-in-law Srikant -- are still at large and the police are confident of nabbing them within days. The arrested persons are: Bhirisetti Nageswera Rao, 22, brother of Raghu, Bokka Ramaswamy, 39, his cousin, Koneti Venkateswerlu, 25, Suryakumari, 28, all from East Godavari and Gudem Sattiraju, 27, and Ganamala Vijeyudu, 30, both from Kurnool district.

    While presenting them before media persons on Thursday, Additional Superintendent of Police A.V. Ranga Nath said that Circle-Inspector Balla Lakshminarayana and Sub-Inspectors -- S.K. Ali, Y.R.K. Srinivas, Ch. Mahesh and B. Nageswera Rao -- did a remarkable job by constituting themselves into special teams to nab the culprits.

    Nabbed in lodge

    The teams nabbed five of them in a lodge at Samalkot on Wednesday. Basing on their information, they arrested the woman in Rajahmundry.

    The additional SP said that the gang's main plan was to kidnap the daughter of the DRDA Assistant Project Director Venkateswera Rao and demand Rs.20 lakhs as ransom. However, they failed in the attempt as someone knocked the door while they were relieving cash from almyrah after making the official's wife immobile. They made a hasty retreat in the car.

    The Additional SP said that Raghu, who lost heavily in the real estate business in Hyderabad, had planned the kidnap basing on the information given by Suryakumari, who worked along with the official in the Velugu project.
