His centenary celebrations conclude on a grand note

VISAKHAPATNAM: Rich tributes were paid to Prof. G. Gopala Rao, former principal of Andhra University College of Science and Technology and HoD of Chemistry, at a function organised to conclude the centenary celebrations of the famous teacher and researcher, here on Tuesday evening.
A large number of his former students, who have held high positions, admirers, friends, family members and relatives attended the function organised by the centenary celebrations committee and School of Chemistry of AU.
Former HoD of Chemistry of AU and a disciple of the late Prof. Gopala Rao, M.N. Sastri presided over the function. Coordinator of the centenary celebrations U. Murali Kkrishna said the methods of great personalities like Prof. Gopala Rao should be adopted by the present generation.
An IAS officer R.V. Vaidyanadhan Ayyar, who was a first batch student of Prof. Gopala Rao, released a souvenir brought out on the occasion of the centenary celebrations. Prof. Gopala Rao was an efficient administrator and an intense researcher, he said.
Several former students of Prof. Gopala Rao and others who studied in AU when he was with the Chemistry Department recounted his efficiency and brilliance. They said that Prof. Gopala Rao’s guidance had helped them to scale greater heights.
Former Rector A. Prasanna Kumar said AU in general and the chemistry department in particular gained reputation thanks to personalities like Prof. Gopala Rao, who was the first Lecturer of the department.
Prof. Brahmaji Rao said for Prof. Gopala Rao, research was not extension of some aspect that had already been found but an idea would take shape in his brain and he was so confident that his knowledge would ultimately find a new aspect. He was always saying that one should think analytically in all aspects and that theoretical thinking would give result. Dr. S.K. Pavana Ram, who is living in the US for the last 50 years spoke in chaste Telugu and said Prof. Gopala Rao had always promoted students, whether they belonged to his department or not. A retired executive of steel plant G. Narayana Rao, Dr. Radhakrishna and others spoke.
Prof. Gopala Rao’s sons G. Kurmanatha Rao, a noted dermatologist G. Raghurama Rao and others participated.
Earlier Rector and Vice-Chancellor in-charge B. Parvateeswara Rao unveiled a bronze bust of Prof. Gopala Rao in front of the School of Chemistry building.
