The 91{+s}{+t}birth anniversary of the legendary playback singer and music composer Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao was celebrated by Ghantasala Sports and Cultural Association (GSCA) here on Tuesday.

After garlanding the statue of the legendary singer on Beach road, Minister for Infrastructure and Investment, Ports, Airports and Natural Gas Ganta Srinivasa Rao said Ghantasala’s melodies had reached the people globally in the form of bhajans, slokas and songs.

His soothing voice lifts one’s spirit and it is a great honour to celebrate his birth anniversary in the city. He said his voice was remarkable beyond ages and a park was likely to be constructed in the future.

Chairman of Andhra Pradesh Hindi Academy Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad described Ghantasala as a persona who involved himself in the melodies and created a niche for himself in the world of Telugu music. Addressing the gathering, founder secretary of GSCA Chenna Tirumala Rao said Ghantasala’s rich contributions to the Telugu community should always be remembered.

“We request the government to build an open auditorium near Ghantasala statue and the shed at the backdrop be removed for good,” he said.

MLAs Malla Vijay Prasad and M. Srinivasa Rao, former chairman of GSCA Mallipudi Nageswar Rao, president of GSCA K. Raju, Sri Kanaka Mahalakshmi Temple trustee Vankayala Tataji and others were present.
