Blaming the system and the government does not help resolve any problem. Having understood this very well, rice millers in Srikakulam have constructed a godown complex in Ravipadu village of Jalumuru mandal in an effort to provide a lasting solution to the storage problem.

Godowns of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) in the district are not sufficient to store 5 lakh tonnes of rice. To overcome the problem, the Srikakulam Rice Millers’ Association has mobilised donations from members and constructed the godown in 25 acres. Initially, it can facilitate storage of 10,000 tonnes of rice. Its capacity will be increased to 30,000 tonnes in a phased manner.

Association president T. Jogarao told The Hindu that the estimated cost of the project was Rs.5 crore. Andhra Bank extended its support to the association by providing a loan of Rs.3.8 crore.

“The godowns will be handed over to the FCI, which in turn pays rent to the association. The amount will be used to clear the bank loan. The storage facility will be a permanent asset for all the 308 members in the district after the loan amount is cleared,” he said.

Mr. Jogarao said the association also planned to develop basic infrastructure such as roads and power connections in and around the godown. Later, a school would also be constructed to cater to the needs of the students of nearby villages.

Mr. Jogarao said the members of the association were keen on taking up charitable activities.

The association had taken up the responsibility of maintaining the Siddashram, where a Vedic school and an old-age home were located. A ‘stupam’ would also be constructed on the ashram premises, he added.
