Religious fervour and gaiety marked Id-ul-Adha, known as Bakrid, a festival of sacrifice, when special prayers were offered at the masjids and other places during the day in city on Monday.

The Masjid-e-Quba organised the Bakrid ceremonies at the Gymkhana Grounds at 7.45 a.m. when a large number of Muslims participated in the namaaz. Special prayers were also offered at places like Chittinagar and Autonagar.

Women, children and the elderly people participated in the prayers with devotion.

The Muslims took part in the mass prayers as part of the festival, which also marked the conclusion of the Haj pilgrimage undertaken to Mecca.

Bakrid occupied a special place as it commemorates the readiness of the First Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God.

Moulana Abdul Wahed, in his discourse at Gymkhana Grounds, spoke on the significance of Qurbani (sacrifice) without which no system or organisation can survive in this world.

“Just as an argument without basis is unacceptable, there is no faith which is complete without trials and tribulations. The believers will get stronger with each tough test of their faith,” he said.

Significance

Referring to the significance of the day of Id-ul-Adha, Moulana Wahed said it was the most profound sacrifice that Prophet Ibrahim did and it would remain a very important occasion in the history of Islam.

The entire life led by him was a symbol of devotion, dedication, and righteousness which was matchless. Prophet Ibrahim left his family and everything for pursuing his divine path, said Moulana Wahed.

Special arrangements were made for the comfort of the devotees participating in prayers, said F. Rahman, president of Masjid-e-Quba.
