The protagonists of separate Telangana State obstructed the State Road Transport Corporation's efforts to recruit conductors and drivers on contract basis in some districts of the region on Wednesday.
The RTC issued notification on Tuesday for recruitment of drivers and conductors following termination of services of over 1,200 contract staff for participating in the ‘Sakala Janula Samme' (general strike involving all sections).
Accordingly, interested candidates who thronged the RTC offices for furnishing their candidature for the posts were obstructed in Karimnagar, Nalgonda and Nizamabad districts resulting in mild tension.
The agitating contract employees accompanied by the activists of the Telangana Joint Action Committee chased away a senior official, hailing from Chittoor, when he arrived in Nalgonda for conducting interviews for contract staff. They allegedly assaulted the senior official raising slogans of Jai Telangana. Unemployed youth who approached the RTC office in Karimnagar had to go back disappointed as the pro-Telangana activists obstructed the recruitment process and sent them away.
Meanwhile, family members of the agitating staff joined the protest and observed a day's fast in line with the call given by the TJAC as the strike entered the ninth day on Wednesday.
Movement of buses remained paralysed in the region, barring skeletal services were operated in the twin cities, while coal mining continued to be affected in the four districts.
