Former chief minister late Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy was a “real hero” who kept his word to the people unlike other “reel heroes”, Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal said on Thursday.

Mr. Rajagopal participated in the 61 {+s} {+t} birth anniversary celebrations of Dr. Reddy held at several places along with Vijayawada Central MLA Malladi Vishnu, former Minister Devineni Rajasekhar (Nehru), Mayor M.V. Ratna Bindu and others.

Leaders and activists of the Congress participated in the ‘bhoomipuja' for erecting a statue of YSR at the police control room. City

Congress Committee president Pyla Sominaidu performed the puja.

Later addressing the gathering at Besant Road, the MP said that Dr. Reddy had never failed to keep his word to the people.

He was resourceful enough to find the funds for implementation of the welfare schemes that were a boon to the common people.

This made his schemes and him very popular with the people.

Mr. Vishnu said YSR was a very big inspiration to him. He urged youth and others who were interested in public service to emulate the great leader of the Congress.

Ms. Ratna Bindu said the former Chief Minister had a special place for Vijayawada in his heart.

Hundreds of crores of rupees were sanctioned for the development of infrastructure and amenities for the citizens when he was at the helm of affairs.

A cake weighing 60 kg was cut at the celebrations held at Besant Road near Mr. Vishnu's office.

The mandapam erected for the purpose was tastefully made with banana stem and leaves.

PCC secretary M. R. G. Vinod Reddy, Mr. Sominaidu, A.P. Grandhalaya Samstha chairman Turlapaty Kuthumba Rao, Congress corporators and others participated in the celebrations.
