HYDERABAD: Krishnapatnam in Nellore district where a greenfield port has been developed in the private sector for the first time in the country is set to become a hub of activity in the near future.

A 21-km railway line taken up to connect the new port with Venkatachalam lying on the Vijayawada-Chennai mainline has been completed. Iron ore brought from the mines of Donimalai and Bellary in Karnataka is now being diverted to Krishnapatnam through this short-cut route as Chennai was not exporting iron ore cargo anymore, officials told Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy here on Tuesday.

The 21-km stretch is part of the 114-km long railway line project taken up at a cost of Rs. 748 crore through a special purpose vehicle to connect Obulavaripalli in Kadapa district with Krishnapatnam port avoiding a circuitous route. Krishnapatnam has been selected for setting up of a super thermal complex and setting up of a 4,000-MW capacity Ultra Mega Power Project, being implemented here through Reliance Group, is under way.
