A smoking and Gutka cessation programme was launched at Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Comprehensive Mental Healthcare at Kothapet here on Friday.

District Collector S. Suresh Kumar, Municipal Commissioner K. Sudhakar and Superintendent of Police released posters on the occasion. Mr. Sudhakar unveiled Biofeedback machine. Executive Director and consultant psychiatrist Ibrahim Khaleel said that the seven- week treatment schedule was intended to help people who want to quit smoking and chewing Ghutka. The treatment method consisted of weekly medication, biofeedback and psychological counselling. Dr Khaleel said that the risk to develop heart disease, lung disease, lung cancer and mouth cancer has increased many folds due to smoking and chewing Ghutka. The huge expenses incurred to receive treatment for these illnesses and the suffering could be avoided if people dependent on smoking and Ghutka decide to stop using them as a preventive measure.
