Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry D. Purandeswari will be inaugurating the e-auction system of tobacco at Periapatna in Karnataka on November 16 (at 11 a.m), according to a press release by Tobacco Board Chairman G. Kamalavardhana Rao.

He stated that the electronic system would facilitate fool-proof method of auctions for sale of tobacco, for which the Tobacco Board had roped in NIIT Technologies Limited as the service provider for designing and implementing the project in all 31 auction platforms on Built-Own-Operate basis for a period of six years.  The present auction system is purely manual which has disadvantages such as cartelisation of trade, discrimination in allotment of bales, ceiling price, errors in recording price etc.
