‘It is helpful for fishermen and AU in its research activity’

VISAKHAPATNAM: Union Minister of State for HRD and local MP D. Purandeswari appealed to Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Prudhviraj Chauhan to allow functioning of the Cyclone Warning Centre (CWC) from here and not to bring it under the control of the Met Office, Hyderabad.

For the last 35 years, the CWC here was doing a great service to people of the coastal area, particularly the fishing community, forecasting cyclones and giving cyclone warnings and thereby saving lives, Ms. Purandeswari said.

CWC, equipped with modern radar and other equipment, was helpful to Andhra University in its research activity, the Minister said, and felt that it was being shifted for the individual benefit of some employees.

She insisted that the CWC should be allowed to function like in the past as it was meant for the coastal area, which faced cyclones more.
