The Movement for People-Centred Development has submitted a memorandum to the District Collector seeking cancellation of the public hearing on the setting up of the ferro alloys plant at Peda Gummuluru village of S. Rayavaram mandal in the district on November 29.

Its convener K. Babu Rao alleged that construction of the plant was started without eliciting the views of the public and without obtaining prior approval. He sought cancellation of the public hearing and initiating action against the management of the plant. The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report failed to give complete information to the public and the environment hazards posed by the plant.

He alleged that the report also failed to take note of the possible impact of pollution on crops, water resources, forests and on buildings. Manganese would be the primary raw material to be used in the plant and it would serious impact on the health of the people living in the area. No mention was mentioned on the method of discharge of wastes. Terming the proposed public hearing a ‘violation' of the 2006 notification of the Environment Ministry, Prof. Babu Rao called upon all right thinking people to oppose the public hearing.
