Praja Rajyam Party city unit criticised the State government for adapting anti-people policies towards the poor. In a statement here on Sunday, city secretary Surath Balakrishna warned the government against postponement of the municipal elections and putting the people under the special officers' rule to impose taxes heavily on the poor, he said.

The State government had embarked on the task of slapping new taxes on the common man and all the political parties would launch an agitation on the tax issues, he said. Some institutions along with some Congress leaders were making money by unlawful methods in various projects and the State government was behaving like a mute spectator, he said.

Instead of acting tough, the State government was just burdening the people with various types of taxes like-- tax on the garbage in Vijayawada city, collecting exorbitant amounts for water connections were some of the examples of such practices, said Mr. Balakrishna.

The common man had been suffering with the continuing price rise of essential commodities, outbreak of the viral fevers at this juncture it is not fair for the governments to impose new taxes, like the tax on garbage, he said.
