Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders were taken into custody by the police here on Friday when they staged a dharna in front of the Chief Minister’s office in the Secretariat protesting against the proposed power tariff hike
Telugu Desam leaders G. Muddu Krishnama Naidu, B.Gopalakrishna Reddy, Ravula Chandrasekhara Reddy, Mandava Venkateswara Rao, Annapurnamma, K.S.Ratnam all MLAs, C.M. Ramesh, MP and B.Venkateswarulu, P.Narender Reddy, A.Narsa Reddy, MLCs staged a sit-in demanding an answer from the Chief Minister on power tariff hike.
However, the Chief Minister had left for Kakinada by then and even Chief Secretary Minne Mathew was out of station.
Criticising the government for the huge gap between supply and demand, they said industries and commercial establishments went into a crisis and thousands of workers were losing jobs.
On the other hand, the increased tariff would result in a steep burden on people already reeling under the impact of Fuel Supply Adjustment (FSA) charges.
Even as they raised slogans demanding suspension of proposed tariff hike, supply of nine-hour power supply to agriculture, police deployed in large numbers, arrested and shifted them to a nearby police station.
