The students of Government Polytechnic (Boys) hostel at Venkateswarapuram took out a rally to protest against the increased mess charges here on Wednesday.
Under the leadership of Telugu Nadu Students Federation district president K. Tirumala Naidu, they submitted a memorandum to the officials at the District Collectorate.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Tirumala Naidu deplored that the mess charges had been increased from Rs. 1,000 per month to Rs. 2,200 though there would not be much burden on the government-run hostels due to supply of subsidised gas and power.
Since the past two months, higher mess charges are being collected from students who had no alternative but to register their protest, he said.
The students, who come from the poorer sections, lamented that they were not able to pay the increased charges due to their financial position.
They took out a rally to the Collectorate, demanding that the hike in charges be withdrawn immediately.
