‘Prospects bright for biotech field in India’

Kakinada: Following are some of the questions raised by students at The Hindu Education Plus career counseling session held at Rangaraya medical college auditorium in Kakinada on Friday and answers given by experts drawn from different institutions.

Q. What are the prospects of biotechnology?

A. Biotechnology is nothing but use of technology in agriculture, food science and medicine and it has a very bright future in India as the nation seeks to become a fully self-reliant by meeting needs of a billion plus population. Biotechnology is modifying the living organisms to meet human needs. After the IT boom, biotechnology is the next most happening area of science and technology.

Q. Are aerospace and aeronautical engineering good choices compared to other branches?

A. These are two areas of engineering which, for the time being, are not so vibrant in India as they are in the western countries. But, they are set to catch up with other areas of engineering profession as the Indian space exploration programs and the civil aviation industry have already registered phenomenal growth.

Q. What about web counseling?

A. Students have to opt for as many colleges as possible in the Web counseling mode. There are 33 helpline centers in the State where the manner of entering their options will be explained. Certificates will be verified on a specified date and seats allotted later depending on the options uploaded into the websites notified by the Department of Technical Education.

Q. Will automobile engineering be a good one to choose?

A. Yes, it is a nice option but the job opportunities are obviously limited to the automotive sector. Within that arena, it is lucrative as India became a hub for manufacturing of different types of passenger vehicles and cargo movers.

Q. What are the prospects of Pharm.D course?

A. The Government of India has introduced Pharm.D programme in 2008-09. This is a six-year course that includes one-year internship in a hospital. This course offers excellent employment opportunities abroad, especially in the USA where medicines are to be dispensed by licensed pharmacists. Drug discovery is one area where professionals can find highly rewarding jobs.

Q. How is the trend of dental courses?

A. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in dental surgery is a very good career option but India has a long way to go to meet the international standards when it comes to the ratio of dentists, which ought to be 1:7,500 against the present 1:22,500. Forensic dentistry is the most sought-after discipline.
