South Central Railway General Manager M.S. Jayanth said here on Thursday that proposals for 25 new trains were sent to the Railway Board for considering for inclusion in the Railway Budget for 2011-12.
Mr. Jayanth, who came here as part of the annual inspection, told reporters that the remodelling of Vijayawada station would be taken up as per a plan prepared earlier. Further, works were being executed to improve passenger amenities in Vijayawada railway station at a cost of Rs.39 crore. The amenities to be created include a few escalators and lifts. Also, more developmental works like extending the cover over 8, 9 and 10 platforms were being taken up for the convenience of passengers.
Mr. Jayanth said that once the ongoing work of remodelling of railway yard was completed in the next three to four months, the problem of late running of trains due to congestion would come to an end. It would also help the authorities to allow a train coming from any direction on to any platform.
The General Manager inaugurated the new office of health inspector and inspected the quality of food items and beverages at a kiosk on platform number 1. Divisional Railway Manager Anurag, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager K. Sambasiva Rao and others were present.
