Implementation of the infrastructural projects must be decentralised and local bodies should drive the blueprint, according to Arun Maira, Member, Planning Commission, Government of India.

Delivering the keynote address at the 6th EuroIndia summit on Green Cities in Hyderabad on Monday, he said, “We should look at local bodies for solutions to produce better results. Solutions developed locally are more contextual and more appropriate to pursue sustainable development.”

The country needed to build lateral networks to learn from each other and improve capability and reform the role of the Centre to give more room for urban India in the infrastructure development.

The summit was a collaboration of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), The Euro India Centre and European Business & Technology Centre in partnership with the Government of Andhra Pradesh. The conference was focused on the theme of “Greening Cities”.

“There needs to be an innovative approach towards the way urbanisation is handled in India, chief guest Deepa Dasmunshi, Union Minister of State for Urban Development, said. “Creating green cities does not mean planting trees. It is creating right infrastructure to make appropriate use of natural resources. This apart, urban development is a State subject and cannot be controlled centrally as the regional requirements for infrastructure are unique,” she added.

The urban population has grown from 27.3 per cent in 2001 to 33.49 per cent in 2011, said M. Maheedhar Reddy, Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development. “City sanitation plans, service-level benchmarking of urban services, Hyderabad Metro Rail Project, etc have been taken up by the government to make the city more resourceful and environment friendly,” Mr. Reddy said.

Smart cities

Intelligent public administration and energy efficiency policies and proper communication networks with citizens would ensure smart cities said Franscisco Javier Leon dela Riva, Mayor, Vallodolid, Spain, and European delegation leader.

Over 300 dignitaries attended the seminar which included dignitaries from Europe and government officials across the country.
