The newly-formed State Panchayat Raj Civil Engineers’ Forum has alleged that projects meant for the welfare of the people have become ‘white elephants, lacking in quality’, because unqualified engineers were being posted to oversee civil works.
This has rendered in wastage of public funds running into thousands of crore, complained president of the forum K. Shyam Sunderin a representation submitted to the department’s Engineer-in-chief in Hyderabad on Thursday.
He alleged that highly qualified civil engineers with B.E, B.Tech, M.E, M.Tech and Ph.D degrees were being kept away from official duties and those with mechanical engineering degrees were not only being encouraged in the department, but also promoted.
This was causing heartburn among the civil engineers, leading to the formation of the forum.
The forum, Mr. Shyam Sunder pointed out, would take up the cause of the disgruntled civil engineers and take it to the notice of the higher-ups, including the Ministers concerned and the Chief Minister.
He appealed to all the people’s representatives and the Panchayat Raj Department officials to recognise the forum as a representative body of civil engineers.
