HYDERABAD: Government whip S. Sailajanath has appealed to Chief Minister K. Rosaiah for steps to restrain those encroaching lands in violation of Heritage Act and taking up illegal constructions in the vicinity of monuments.

In a representation to the Chief Minister, Mr. Sailajanath demanded that an inquiry be ordered into illegal constructions and encroachments of land near Penugonda fort in Anantapur district by some individuals.

Mr. Sailajanath said the fort had constructions of architectural value including the ‘Galigopuram', ‘Thimmarusu prison', ‘Gagan Mahal', water tank etc. and they were accorded the status of monuments by the Central Archaeology Department. The department had also prohibited new constructions within a radius of 300 yards from the monument.
