VIJAYAWADA: Several private bus operators have halted nearly 250 services to the State Capital in view of the volatile political situation over there.

After Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram’s statement emphasising the need for holding wide-ranging consultations on the demand for separate Telangana, violence broke out across the Telangana region, with rioters in some instances targeting buses of private transport operators of coastal Andhra region. A good number of 250 private buses that run between the twin cities and Vijayawada on a daily basis were either partially or badly damaged in the attacks.

“The buses returned here with window panes broken. These have been halted in the city and the owners may wait till normalcy is restored in Telangana,” said Deputy Transport Commissioner T. Raghunath on Friday. Since private services were contract carriages, the operators had the freedom to resume their operations at their own convenience considering the prevailing situation in the State, he said.

The Telugu Desam Party, meanwhile, strongly condemned the attacks by the Telangana Rashtra Samithi cadres on the TDP leaders and the properties belonging to the people of other regions.

Party MLA Devineni Umamaheswara Raosaid that the TRS activists should not resort to attacks and violence as it would only complicate matters at this stage.

He visited the TDP party office in the city here for the first time after giving up indefinite fast.
