Rajahmundry: Bukka Siva Kumar, prime accused in the murder of advocate and journalist V.S.R. Kalyan, surrendered before the Prakasamnagar police on Thursday.

It may be recalled that Kalyan was kidnapped and murdered on the night of February 22 and his body was found in Maredumilli forest in a decomposed state three days later.

Husband of Rupa Suryasri, the accused allegedly developed a grudge against Kalyan as he had taken up the divorce case of the couple. Siva Kumar even suspected an affair between Kalyan and his wife.

Element of surprise

For the police who were continuing their search, Sivakumar's appearance at the police station in the morning was a surprise.

Though the police and press cameramen got a wind of Siva Kumar's intention to surrender, none recognised him as he walked into the police station along with three of his friends in a casual way. Even after he claimed to be the accused in the case, it took some time for the police to realise that he was indeed the person they were looking for, take him into custody and prepare a case-sheet. He would be produced in court on Friday.

In this case, the police arrested two persons on February 27 and two more on March 4. Bukka Kanakaiah, father of Siva Kumar, and S. Vijay were still at large.
