NALGONDA: The Suryapet police on Friday arrested nine members of the Pratighatana group on the charge of resorting to extortion.
Addressing a press conference at the district police office here, DIG R.Eswara Reddy said that a pistol, a revolver, three tapanchas and 22 live rounds had been recovered from their possession.
Basing on a complaint filed by an engineer of the Sri Ram Sagar Project at Chivvemla police station, a police team laid trap for the extortionists, he said.
One Paidimarthi Veeraiah alias Borra Veeraiah alias Ravi, 35, who had worked with Raithu Kooli Sangham, formed the gang to extort money from rich.
They had collected Rs.20,000 from managers of SRSP canal, the DIG said.
The arrested included, P.Veeraiah (35), P.Lingaiah (25), P.Bhiksham (23), K.Shiava Kumar (30), V.Venkanna (35), E.Venkanna (18), G.Veeraiah (19), M.Arjun (34), G.Veeraiah (28) and J.Upender (30).
The DIG announced cash reward for police teams led by DSP Ashok Reddy and Circle Inspector M.Tirupatanna.
