VIJAYAWADA: The package for modernising of Prakasam Barrage at an estimated cost of Rs. 204.67 crores has been approved and work will begin this season, Vijayawada Irrigation Circle Superintending Engineer D. Chandra Rao has said.

Talking to The Hindu on Thursday, Mr. Rao said repair, and if necessary replacement, of crest gate hosting equipment, gear boxes, wire ropes and electronic switches that control the rising and lowering of the barrage gates would be taken up as part of the package, which forms part of the Krishna Delta Modernisation Project. Repairs would also be taken up to the cement concrete aprons downstream and upstream the barrage.

The water upstream the barrage would have to be depilated, like it was done in 2005 Mr. Rao said.
