The Irrigation authorities opened 30 crest gates of Prakasam Barrage by a height of one foot to release about 21,700 cusecs of water downstream at 8 p.m. on Thursday.

The decision to open the crest gates was taken in view of the inflows coming from the intermediary catchment between Nagarjuna Sagar dam and the barrage following heavy rains mainly in Khammam district. Though initially 1,000 cusecs was released from Nagarjuna Sagar too, it was later stopped in view of the flood in the intermediary catchment, the officials said.
