Forum president writes letter to UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi
VISAKHAPATNAM: Praja Spandana, a forum for common cause and promotion of public interest, has sought the intervention of United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi for formation of a separate railway zone with headquarters at Visakhapatnam.
Stating that Visakhapatnam division was meted out a raw deal in the formation of new zones by the previous Government, Praja Spandana president C.S. Rao said that with the formation of Greater Visakha Municipal Corporation, the importance of the city had gone up manifold.
In a letter to Ms. Gandhi, Mr. Rao, a retired Indian Economic Service officer, welcomed the proposed visit of UPA Chairperson to Visakhapatnam city to take part in Presidential Fleet Review next month.
He said that the new zone should consist of Visakhapatnam division and newly carved out divisions at Rajahmundry and Srikakulam and asked her to look into the plea for a new zone without further delay.
At the time of the formation of East Coast Railway with headquarters at Bhubaneswar, the plea for a separate zone with headquarters at Visakhapatnam was ignored due to lack of political pressure.
Mr. Rao said: "If an unbiased quick techno-economic study is carried out by a competent agency, we are sure, you will be convinced of our demand for new zone called South East Coast Railway zone with headquarters here."
