State Election Commission working out modalities following High Court nod

Elections to ZPTC and MPTC were last held in July 2001Details on number of phases are being worked outThere will be a gap of four days between each phase of polling

HYDERABAD: The State Election Commission may issue notification for Panchayat elections in a day or two, with the Andhra Pradesh High Court giving a go-ahead to the Government.

Soon after the court's nod on Friday evening, hectic activity was witnessed in the commission with State Election Commissioner A.V.S. Reddy and Secretary G.N. Rao meeting officials to work out modalities for the notification. Panchayat Raj Principal Secretary M. Samuel also met Mr. Reddy.

Elections to 1,096 Mandal Parishad presidents and an equal number of Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency members, 14,617 Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency (MPTC) members and 22 Zilla Parishads would be announced in the notification.

Elections to ZPTC and MPTC members would be direct while that to ZP chairman and Mandal Parishad presidents would be indirect. Elections to Zilla and Mandal Parishads would be on party basis. Elections to ZPTC and MPTC were last held in July 2001.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Reddy said that the court had given clearance for announcement of poll schedule. "We are holding discussions with district Collectors to fix the number of phases in which Mandal and Zilla Parishad polls have to be conducted," he said.

The notification would be issued after these consultations.
