ELR being avoided to the extent possible: official
VISAKHPATNAM: Eastern Power Distribution Company Ltd. (EPDCL) authorities have changed the power-cut timings in the city with effect from Friday.
This was in response to a report published in these columns on Thursday, highlighting the plight of various sections of people, particularly senior citizens, who were robbed of their afternoon siesta due to power-cut being imposed from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. every day.
“The revised load shedding timings are: 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Emergency Load Relief (ELR) is being avoided in the city to the extent possible,” Divisional Engineer (Zone –I) A.V.V. Surya Pratap said.
He appealed to consumers to reduce usage of air conditioners in view of the drop in electricity generation.
The lighting loads had been greatly reduced due to increased use of CFL bulbs, but the power consumption increased due to high growth in the usage of ACs.
The domestic consumption increased by 25 per cent compared to last year.
“A majority of consumers are going for a minimum of 1.5 ton AC. These air-conditioners consume 2.25 to 2.5 units a day depending on the Star rating. Local makes consume higher units,” he said.
Many consumers were not even bothered about switching off after the desired cooling was achieved.
Some realise their folly only at the end of the month on getting their bill.
