The detection and pilferage of energy (DPE) squad of Eastern Power Distribution Company Ltd (EPDCL) has imposed a penalty of Rs.11.78 lakh on its consumers indulging in power pilferage. Thirty four cases were booked recently after a series of raids. EPDCL Superintendent Engineer (DPE wing) P.V.V. Satyanarayana said on Tuesday that the theft cases were detected in five operation circles – four in Srikakulam, four in Vizianagaram, two in Visakhapatnam, 12 in Rajahumudry and 12 in Eluru circle.
Cases of meter bypass and tampering also were unearthed during the raids. He said EPDCL would intensify its campaign of detecting cases of theft/pilferage of power, which was one of the reasons for loss of revenue.
He stated that under Srikakulam operation circle limits, they booked cases against four consumers and imposed a fine of Rs.29,632. In Vizianagaram, Rs.91,733 was realised from 12 consumers. The highest amount of Rs.6.94 lakh was collected in Rajahmundry circle from 12 erring consumers. While Rs.3.25 lakh was received in Eluru, Rs.37,585 was realised in Visakhapatnam operation circle.
During one raid, DPE squad found theft of power by a domestic consumer in Sannapu Veedhi, in another raid in S. Rayavaram, a farmer was found directly tapping power for his agricultural operations.
