Rayalaseema region will draw 124 tmcft of surplus water, says Mayor TRS leaders urged not to oppose capacity hike
KADAPA: Kadapa Mayor P. Ravindranath Reddy on Thursday warned of a mass movement by people of Rayalaseema if opposition parties continued to oppose or create hurdles to enhancement of Pothireddypadu head regulator capacity. Pothireddypadu head regulator was the lifeline of all the projects in the drought-prone Rayalaseema region, he said at a press conference. Kadapa district was parched except KC Canal ayacut area, he said. The projects in Rayalaseema would starve for water if the head regulator capacity was not hiked, he said. Telugu Desam Party founder N.T. Rama Rao conceived Telugu Ganga, Galeru Nagari, Handri Neeva and Velugonda projects water for which had to be drawn through the head regulator.Rayalaseema region would draw 124 tmcft of surplus water out of over 1,400 tmcft flowing waste into the sea, he said. TDP leaders were betraying Rayalaseema by opposing the head regulator capacity increase. Congress MLAs -- P. Janardhana Reddy and M. Sasidhar Reddy -- were opposing what former Chief Minister M. Channa Reddy had proposed in the past, he alleged. The TRS leaders would not oppose the capacity hike if they toured Rayalaseema and gauged the drought conditions, Mr. Ravindranath Reddy hoped. He urged them to realise that Bachawat Tribunal allotted 122.7 tmc to Rayalaseema and Shribagh Pact recommended priority to projects in Rayalaseema region over other regions. TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu and party leaders M.V. Mysoora Reddy and M.V. Ramana Reddy were well aware of the need to enhance capacity, he said. Chief Minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy had allotted adequate funds and was executing irrigation projects in all the three regions on a war footing, he said. Urging Opposition parties not to rake up needless controversies, he warned them that people of Rayalaseema would agitate if obstructions were raised. posed to enhance its capacity.
